The perfect Christmas day dress

How we love this Kate Sylvester dress for Christmas day. Stretchy enough to allow for expanding-stomach syndrome, yet bright and happy enough to compensate for annoying relatives/the stress of family politics/having to attend 50 different gatherings in one day.

Tee dresses. What can we say? Arguably one of fashion's greatest inventions during the summer months. Kind of like wearing a top without pants, while remaining not only acceptable-looking, but cool to boot. This one is by the supremely lovely and purse-friendly Something Else. Would also make a great Christmas gift.

Daisy crazy

I'm not going to lie, I was more than a little excited when I scored a vintage Levi's denim jacket on Ebay for $1.25. Okay, so with postage it came to a grand total of $8.25, but still, it cannot be denied that I landed a bargain.

You probably won't be able to pick up with Gorman daisy jacket at the $2 shop, but isn't it adorable? I'm thinking of adding it to my denim collection. So perfect for cool summer nights.

Flapper time

It's officially party season. And while black is always fabulous, we love the way the fringing on this Zimmermann dress gives it a bit of 1920s flapper elegance. Very Bullets Over Broadway. With a modern twist.

TL Wood commands you

I command a denim skirt that doesn't remind me of Dannii Minogue's clothing collection back in 1980-something.

I command a skirt I can wear with tights and boots or sandals and a cami.

It's not really a canoe

Yes. I have tried canoing. I got stuck in some kind of overhanging shrub, fell out and almost drowned. Since then, I have had a painful association with the mere mention of such a water vehicle and prefer to pretend like they don't exist.

Skin and Threads call this the 'canoe' dress. It should conjure up painful memories, but for some reason it doesn't. Because of it's gorgeous colour perhaps? Or easy-breezy style? Maybe because it's so perfect for those hot summer days when you feel all hot and bothered and puffed up? Or maybe because it looks nothing like a canoe or a killer shrub and therefore fails to trigger a horrific memory from the past. Whatever. I love it anyways.

A better alternative

Who doesn't love the idea of parading around in a crisp men's shirt looking fabulous? Just think Diane Keaton, Katherine Hepburn and Sharon Stone. Unfortunately, there is also the possibility that one may resemble those two men's shirt with no pants women who paraded around the Melbourne Cup this year. They really should have ditched the orange spray-on legs and gone for a Fleur Wood shirt dress instead. Much more stylish, no?

Graffiti with a cause

When I was in high school some of my classmates were banned from Highpoint for graffiti crimes. And I have to admit, it was kind of exciting sitting next to such criminals during year 10 maths.

Sadly, I don't think they figured out a way to turn their graffiti habit into an art form. At least, not in the way the Woodford and Co have managed to with this scribble tee dress. So fun. But definitely not illegal.

New romance with Life with Bird

It's official. I have a new romance. With Life with Bird and these frocks. My dilemma. Which one should I chose? Please help.

Oh yes. We've all had unseen hopes. Like, how I always, always wanted to be on Young Talent Time and my parents wouldn't even consider sending me to the Johnny Young Talent School. Shattered dreams, unseen hopes, they are part of the messy texture of everyday life.

This top really is Pretty in Pink

Has anyone been to see The Loved Ones? Touted as Pretty in Pink meets Wolf Creek, I was kind of curious, so I went along. Let's just say, the highlight was the experience of sitting in a cinema full (okay, not full, as there weren't actually many people in the audience) of teenagers and their amusing, adolescent-style commentary. Think 'Gross', 'Oh My God!' and 'Stop it!' yelled enthusiastically at just the right moments. Road kill possum for supper anyone? How about a home made lobotomy complete with an electric drill and a kettle of boiling water?

Thankfully, Life with Bird are true to their word. This tank really is pretty. And it's pink. And it's perfect for lovely spring days. Not gross at all.

I am a painter

There was a time when I dreamt of becoming a tortured artist/painter. I even went so far as to wish I was a Piscean rather than an anally retentive Virgo. Sadly, I possessed no talent for painting and I am still a Virgo. But at least I'm not tortured. Really. I'm fine.

I mean, at least I can look like a painter. And in this postmodern, digitally enhanced age, image is more important anyway. Isn't it?

I mean, I still wish she and Rachel Zoe would become friends again and do a reality show together. Or that they would at least talk about why they hate each other and get it over with. Is it because everyone blamed Rachel when Nicole got really skinny? And what's the deal with Paris? And that husband of hers? Is he a womaniser or what?

Whatever. Her jewelry rocks. As does her hair.

Like many a teenager growing up in the 1990s, I wanted to learn how to tie-dye. How cool, I thought, to revamp an old bonds tee with tripes of pink and purple, maybe some green? Plus, it would match my Fudge hair color. Beauty!

I have come a long way since then. As has tie-dye. Check out these amazing Opening Ceremony velvet mules. You certainly wouldn't find these amongst the skull-shaped bongs at Off Ya Tree. No, you'd more likely see them on Chloe Sevigny. And at Frisck, of course.

Hunting for buried treasure

Every now and then I go through a phase of organising my wardrobe. Sometimes, when I stumble upon my favourite dress that I forgot I had, it's like finding buried treasure. Like if I happened to discover this 'treasure' tee by Secret Squirrel buried under a mass of old cardis, I'd be one happy hunter indeed. Might be time to get neat and tidy once again.

I've experienced too-short-at-the-back dress anxiety ever since the time I traipsed around Carlton with my frock tucked into my knickers. So I'm naturally very excited about TL Wood's devine dress in pearl. The heavens have opened and the light is finally shining through. And my knickers will never been seen publicly again. Praise the Lord.

The wrap-sensation

Is there a woman alive who doesn't look great in a wrap dress? We are in love with this Spring-tastic number by Kate Sylvester. So pretty and wearable. Definitely one of this season's best.

In the navy

I didn't think much of my grade one teacher, Miss Williams. In spite of being a grown woman she talked in baby talk and wore way too much lycra for my tastes. I did, however, love it when she took us for Huff n' Puff and played nothing but The Village People. Her rendition of their hit song, In the Navy, was particularly spectacular.

Every time I wear this Secret Squirrel silk skirt I will think of Miss Williams and the pigtails she often wore. And I will hope that while she's still huffing and puffing, she's done away with the stretch fabrics and baby voice. I urge you all to hope along with me.

Cocktails anyone?

How to make a Caipirnha

For this yummy Spring cocktail you will need:

8 limes, halved, each half cut into quarter
45g (1/4 cup, lightly packed) brown sugar
1 cup ice cubes
250ml (1 cup) dark rum

Then you just need to:

Put the limes and sugar into a bowl and pound with the end of a rolling pin until the limes are crushed.

Spoon the lime mixture evenly among your very best serving glasses. Top with ice and pour over the rum.

Crazy stripes

Some people think those who wear horizontal stripes are crazy. They say stripes make an individual appear short and fat. I have even heard horizontal stripe wearers referred to as crazy stripes. Can you imagine?

Time for a revolution. Embrace those crazy stripes and wear them with pride. Kate Sylvester certainly has. And we love her for it.

It's French-tastic

Everyone knows the French have great style and a mythological way of eating croissants without stacking it on. This 'Frenchie' tank by Woodford and Co is a croissant-eating classic if you ask me. Perfect for sitting in cafes with a cafe au lait and a French-language version of Madame Bovary that you can't understand. I'm just saying...

Winter break

Everyone goes on about the LBD and how every girl must have at least one. Admittedly, I have about 10, but that is beside the point. Another often overlooked wardrobe essential would have to be the t-dress. So easy and comfy and perfect for any occasion.
